For four weeks, Football took centre stage in our Host City Stuttgart: During UEFA EURO 2024 (14 June to 14 July), five European Championship matches have taken place in the Baden-Württemberg state capital, including one appearance by the German team in the group stage and one quarter-final game. Many thousands of guests from all over the world were expected. Stuttgart gave UEFA EURO 2024 what it deserved: a festival of football that turned the whole city into a stadium, welcomed its guests in a cosmopolitan and warm manner and had even more to offer off the pitch.

Stuttgart has always been a paradise for connoisseurs and those with a taste for delicious flavours. Swabian cuisine and regional wines also have an excellent international reputation. Whether it's Maultaschen (Swabian ravioli), Kässpätzle (Swabian cheese noodles) or Fleischküchle (Swabian meatballs) – there's no getting around the Stuttgart classics. Schlossplatz, the Television Tower and Wilhelma – there are many sights that make Stuttgart unique. Here are seven great highlights of Baden-Württemberg's state capital.

The Television Tower

The city's landmark

It is the city's landmark and just as popular with locals as it is with tourists: the Stuttgart Television Tower. In just 36 seconds, two lifts take visitors up to the 150 metre high viewing platform, which offers a fantastic panoramic view. In clear weather you can see as far as the Swabian Alb, 60 kilometres away. When it opened on 5 February 1956, it was the first ever reinforced concrete television tower. And with a total height of 217 metres, it was the tenth tallest building in the world at the time. Queen Elizabeth II was one of the many millions of tourists to visit the tower from all over the world. She looked around the concrete needle together with Prince Philip during her visit to Germany in 1965.

Green oasis in the heart of the city

This is where the Middle Ages meet modernity: The baroque gardens in the centre of Stuttgart with their old trees, fountains and fields of flowers are considered one of the most beautiful places in Europe. The green oasis is framed by some of Stuttgart's most beautiful historic buildings. The Old and New Palace, the Art Museum and the Königsbau are located here. Beautiful old fountains, sunbathing lawns and numerous cafés create a very special atmosphere. They turn the Schlossplatz into a meeting place for Stuttgart residents and visitors from all over the world. As the square is located directly on the Königstraße shopping street, it is also the ideal starting point for a shopping tour through the city centre.

The State Theatre

Historic site with world-class status

The historic opera, ballet and theatre complex is the largest multi-genre theatre in Europe and caused an international sensation when it opened in 1912. Today, the Stuttgart Opera and Ballet in particular are recognised as world-class venues. Around half a million spectators attend approximately 1000 performances each season. A total of 1,350 employees from more than 50 nations ensure that the Opera House, the Schauspielhaus, the Kammertheater and the Liederhalle remain operational.

The Wilhelma

Zoo and botanical gardens

It is a unique place in Germany: Wilhelma is the only combination of zoo and botanical gardens in Germany. The magnificent 19th century park is home to 1200 animal and more than 8500 plant species. The most popular leisure facility in Host City Stuttgart extends over around 30 hectares with its spacious gardens. The Moorish buildings, which exude an oriental flair in the heart of Baden-Württemberg, are particularly worth seeing. The water lilies in the heated pond in the Moorish Garden are considered to be the largest in the world.

New Palace

Dream setting for weddings

Once upon a time, the Palace of Versailles served as a model for the magnificent palace in the centre of Stuttgart. The palatial three-winged complex was built between 1746 and 1807 as the seat of power of Württemberg's dukes and kings. Carl Eugen von Württemberg, just 16 years old at the time, felt that the Old Palace was no longer sufficiently imposing – a new residence was needed. Together with the Old Palace and Schlossplatz, the New Palace still forms the urban centre of Stuttgart. Today, the New Palace houses two ministries and a museum, and the magnificent marble hall can be hired for weddings.

Mineral baths

Water from healing springs

Stuttgart is Germany's mineral water capital. Some 44 million litres of this precious water gush out of the city's springs – every day. Part of this flows into the three municipal mineral baths: the Leuze, the SoleBad Cannstatt and the Mineralbad Berg. All three are fed with water that comes from officially recognised healing springs. In Bad Cannstatt and Berg, the mineral water also contains highly concentrated carbon dioxide. Dipping into the sparkling water feels a little like bathing in champagne. So it's no wonder that the spa culture in Stuttgart has a long tradition: even the ancient Romans appreciated these natural fountains of youth.

The meeting place for gourmets

It is considered to be Germany's most beautiful market hall: built in 1914, the listed Art Nouveau building in the centre of Stuttgart offers space for 33 stalls on the ground floor alone. Regional and international specialities are served here. The very special character of the high, light-flooded hall makes the market a mecca for connoisseurs and nostalgics alike.

Travelling Stuttgart by motorhome

If you want to explore the touristic and scenic highlights in and around Stuttgart by motorhome, you are spoilt for choice: shady forests, picturesque lakes and vineyards straight out of a picture book. The numerous pitches are located in peaceful natural surroundings and yet not far from the region's municipalities.

Quality criteria were developed as part of a funding programme for the establishment of motorhome parking spaces for the Murr/Bottwartal pilot area:

Category Comfort: Central and fully equipped motorhome sites
Category Regio Standard: Infrastructure available, scenically attractive or quietly located near communities
Category Regio Basic: Simple natural pitches in the countryside or simple, quiet pitches in communities

The parking spaces certified as part of the project are labelled accordingly on the map.

Explore Host City Stuttgart

Bus tours for individualists

It is one of the most popular ways to explore cities: Hop-on/Hop-Off-Tourenhop-on/hop-off tours, where visitors decide for themselves where they want to get off and how long they want to spend at each sight. There are three different routes in Stuttgart for anyone who wants to explore the city on their own terms. Each hop-on/hop-off ticket is valid for 24 hours.

Three bus tours for Stuttgart

Visitors can choose between these three varied tours:

The Blue Tour

The buses initially travel from Stuttgart city centre in the direction of the Neckar and Wilhelma. Stops are located at the major museums. From Bad Cannstatt, the route then takes you to the wine region with the opportunity to visit the vineyards on a walk and sample a glass of wine. Then it's back to the centre. The route includes a total of nine stops. The trip takes around 100 minutes with no interruptions.

The Green Tour

The Green Tour takes you to the south and west of Stuttgart and to great vantage points such as the television tower with its 150 metre high visitor platform. Other stops include the Funicular Railway, the Rack Railway and the famous Stäffele, the many open-air staircases that have become something of a Stuttgart trademark. The Green Tour comprises a total of eight stops. The journey takes around one hour.

The Wine Tour

A trip through Stuttgart's famous wine landscape. After starting in Untertürkheim, the route takes you through vineyards to the Wine Museum with its vinotheque. At the boarding and disembarking points of the tour, which has a total of nine stops, you can take a walk through the vineyards. Of course, it is also possible to taste the regional wines. The pure journey time without interruptions takes about 40 minutes.
